After spending some time sharing fascinating stories with other collectors of wondrous tales, I'm wondering if there would be some appetite here in Arx for a get together where we all talk about our favorite ancient tales about the likes of Gryphons, Dragons and even Trees perhaps. Or maybe not, I'll have nightmares about those tall trees beyond the wall at this rate.

Relationship Note on Cambria

All of us worked hard to achieve one of our greater goals. That achievement was not carried on my shoulders, or yours, but by all of us. The fact is that we did doggedly pursue it and we did invest a great deal of ourselves into that effort and while our contributions may have been many, it was the efforts of the whole that reached up to grasp what we desired and claim it. Every meeting, every rendevous, every exchange of favors, and every single deed performed was in pursuit of that dream. Even those we thought could be of benefit, but ultimately were not. We deserve to pat one another on the back for sure, but never should we forget the common of Ostria who have worked hard to push that dream into reality. Hand in hand, shoulder to shoulder, from noble to commoner, we have worked for a greater Ostria. Nor should those who stepped forward as friends, allies, and compatriots be forgotten. Long will their generosity, ingenuity, and assistance be remembered. Their names are known and even if a whisper of aid is sought, it will be paid in return.

The promise made has been fulfilled and I truly am thankful that I never put into action plans I may have made upon being given that contract of old. While it was not the expected path or journey which I planned for, it was one that I did eventually adjust myself to for the betterment of not only others but myself. Overall it was a humbling experience and while the those first few years were strained at times? I have come to see them as just another trial to shape the person that I am today. Where some of your kin held resentment toward me for obvious reasons, we grew beyond them. We tempered the heat of our passion and refined it into something resolute.

Your leadership of Ostria has taken it to heights it has not known for a long time. For that I thank the gods. We must also remember those friends and allies who aided in the achievement of that goal. Proof to Ostria that sometimes arms must be opened in the pursuit of true progress. Gates shut and barred will keep even friends and the well-meaning out. Caution is a reasonable trait, but not at the sake of growth and experiencing what the world offers. Under your leadership Ostria has began to step forward more and more, making itself known and its honorable intentions felt.

You have proven the commitment you hold toward the words you speak and give to others. Through your actions, the word of my mother and myself were put to a true test and despite there being initial reluctance, that word was found to be encased in diamondplate. Together the people of Ostria will thrive and prosper under the guiding hand of House Mazetti. It is our duty, it is our honor, it is our right, it is our obligation to ensure that our actions are ever the sword and shield of our people.

Whether it is by the sword arm of Lord Theron to exercise the will of the Hydra. The charm, grace, and strength of Lady Alessia to show the world that Ostria can step forward from its walls. Or the keen eyes, ears, and quick wit of Lord Vitalis, the very Ghost that moves unwitnessed. The dedication and integrity of Lord Marzio and the Second to keep our beloved home safe. Whether it is through the talents of Lady Braith and her desire to always seek to find a way to improve, whether it is the self or beyond. Ostria is made safer under the guidance of Lady Antea, the Marshal of Ostria, who will always put duty and loyalty to family before simple wants. Even the seas near Ostria are made safer with the presence of Lord Strozza and those horses of the sea that follow his most capable direction. Should there arise an occasion that we need seek out wisdom, then we know that Lady Marvella will stand ready to provide. One mustn't forget that Lady Miranda will likewise contribute to a safer Ostria as the days, weeks, and months unfold through her great deal of experience and accomplishments she attained before ever becoming known as a Mazetti. These are but a few that will provide security and vision well into the future, without going into the vast number of names who hold the name of Mazetti or those who have been acknowledged as Scales. Whether performing duties within Arx, Ostria, or beyond the people of the Walled City are served well by those they serve in turn. No matter if the contributions have been great or small, they have all served to further forge bonds of loyalty and devotion for us all.

More fitting than ever now that the people have began to call you what we have always known? Today I write with a great sense of satisfaction.

Hail Hydra.

I see you are winning friends with the truth again, dear brother. People don't like to be reminded of the crimes of the dead.

Alrec killed half of his crew when he swore to Pravus, and even though the compact has brushed it aside, I doubt that the Sentinel will.

It seems like spring is not just a season for new beginnings, but fresh returns. I was very pleased to see Verity had made her way back to Arx and was amenable to continuing work as my protégé. Not only that, but Richard has come back to Arx as well. I've given him a project, of sorts. Hopefully, it can give him what he needs right now.

It's rejuvenating, in a way, to be able to welcome so many familiar faces back.

This change of seasons has given me much to be grateful to Lagoma for. Hopefully, I can make the most of it.

There is no company as welcome as that of a horse. The horse has many roles in our world: stalwart companions, good friends, perfect confidants. A horse will never spread salacious rumors or annoy you with inanities. A horse does its tasks, obeys its training, and needs only payment in hay and the occasional carrot. Were all people as loyal and trustworthy as a good horse, we would find the troubles of our world as morning dew. And yet the gods have afflicted this world with men, and so I must supply men with horses. The work continues ever onward.

For posterity to Vellichor, I submit to the Whites that my journey to Arx has concluded without incident. Unless you count the dust and discomfort that comes with long days on wagons and afoot. It did provide an opportunity to take rest and shelter in the shrines and waystations along the roads, at least, and to spend some hours with keepers of the rural places of worship. The Solace continue to give all kindly aid to travelers, their fellows of the Faith and otherwise, and they have my thanks for making my journey a little more comfortable and escorting me here safely.

I am a child of the capital, but I've been so many years away it is taking me time to reacclimate to the steps and rhythm of the lovely, chaotic dance of its streets. The tempo in the Oathlands is more measured and ordered. I learned much in my time studying with the theologians there, including perhaps some temperance of my own, but I confess I have missed the intoxicating rush of this city. Such color, such life, such a mix of peoples all seeking the right path for themselves toward the gods' virtues. I hope I've learned enough to guide them wisely, and to better understand my own path.

I am conflicted by stillness.
The stillness before the ship, where the ground itself, soaked in blood and debris, lifeless and mute, sought to suck me down. The stillness of faces and limbs and bodies.
There is something to be said for stillness. Lingering quietly in the hall, and watching everyone pass, catching bits of their lives as they drop them like crumbs from their lips. Leaning at doorways, watching.
But when others are still, the uneasiness comes over me.

When I was born, I was already sentient. Walking, seeing, hungry and conscious of being alone. Not a squalling infant like others seem to be when they come into being. I came from stillness and darkness.
Then there was the ship. I remember then that nothing was still anymore. It rocked, day and night, night and day, and the rippling surface of the sea separated the emptiness of the sky from the wealth of its depths. The sea would eat ships, would eat mutineers and lapped at the land, slowly devouring it. The constant motion let my soul have peace. I dreamed of what lay beneath and sometimes longed for the Osprey to fold its wings and sink beneath the surface so I could see what was hidden.
Nothing is truly still, not even death.

My return to Arx has been divine. There has been no shortage of succulent food, intoxicating drinks, scintillating conversations, and of course spending precious time with my children who have grown leaps and bounds since I left. I missed their birthdays but made up for this with presents.

Also the gossip has been, *smacks lips together* Mm mm mmm!

Tomorrow marks the end of another year on this spin of the wheel for Sydney of no surname worth repeating, and I can't say it's been a particularly uneventful year. If you'd come at me a year ago and told me half of the outlandish things that were going to happen to me this year, I'd have looked at you blankly. Yet, here I stand. Through whatever twist of fate, I managed to catch a drink with some people who would change the trajectory of my life, all in one evening.

I went from spending every waking moment pinching coppers and scraping my living out in the pits to managing to inexplicably become the Peoples Choice at The People's Tournament, and with that came enough coin to stop living moment to moment. To buy hides enough to stop myself freezing to death. To make time enough to stop being the solitary woman I'd been since my apprenticeship. Connections. Friends. Recreations. It's been a year that defied every expectation.

It has not been without loss, nor without fear or doubt, but I like to think that has been overwhelmed by the positivity that has come from those around me. A willingness to offer me a shoulder. The unflinching resolve to slap me across the face when I needed it. To believe in me, in ways I've not been believed in before.

The way ahead feels dark and terrifying as I turn the page on this moment, but I'll make myself prepared, and meet it as I always do: Boldly, foolishly, and with a smile.

Recently, I had the opportunity to assist in a Mirrormask ritual of reflection by sharing my own meditations aloud, and then assisting those who remained afterward toward conquering their own darker selves. My thanks to the Godsworn and to my lovely wife the Second Reflection who conducted the rite for the opportunity.
