A request for a new song to be written. How challenging! They do not wish lyrics, only music, now how to make the music 'speak' will be the task before me.

Relationship Note on Arn

It has taken me time to consider what words to put to paper regarding the passing of Duke Arn Telmar.

I did not know the man at all, I met him a few times, introduced through the Great Grim Duke, and I can see how he and Harald considered one another birds of a feather.

Birds of a feather that we could all learn so much from. I am grateful I had the chance, even if it was brief.

I mourn him along with his family and ours.

Especially since these families are to be joined soon through marriage. One of Duke Arn's last political acts, setting up his daughter's future.

We will do him proud in Grimhall, I hope.

Thank you to the many who replied with messages to my query here in the journals. It is rewarding, even in such dire matters, to know that our words are read, even by those we do not know well, and that strangers will reach out to enlighten us in times of darkness.

Relationship Note on Thesarin

Has the stranger done something to warrant death? Do they represent danger to you and yours? Or was it that murder for profit was acceptable? I honestly do not know the answers to those questions as I am not acquainted with the customs of Crownlander tribes. It makes me sad to think that life is viewed so cheaply, and I would be further prompted to call such people savages. If life has no meaning, if there is no basic respect for life granted to another human being, then those people, in my own opinion, would be outside of civilization.

I would go so far as to say that if I treat someone with respect irrespective of whether I respect them then I am civilized. perhaps even diplomatic. There is one level where I wish to have the respect of someone, but on another level the behavior is what matters.

If you are a leader you know this. If you have two people who hate each other working on the same project, you tell them to treat each other with respect. This is how we get things done.

I don't know if I've ever discussed seatouched wool, but I like the term "swool" so much, I'll have to find an excuse.

We can't just say that maybe the blind person is having fun on the slippery rocks.

Everybody deserves the chance to know what's under their feet.

Don't they?

I can assure you that I have known Abandoned who have lied. Frequently and with great skill. Not any that I call friends though. Certainly not!

Kill a stranger and steal their wealth, might swing in the green.

Kill a host of strangers and take their wealth, might be named a hero.

In my beginning studies of Alchemy I am seeing so many connections to the rest of the world I know.

Politics is a kind of alchemy too, it is mixing together ingredients and hoping for a result.

And failures are as educational as success.

Swool. I like that so much I am going to adopt that for myself when we discuss, well, swool! With summer slipping into autumn's embrace, there will be plenty of such talks no doubt.

Thank you to all who have provided such good advice and encouragement. I can safely say that we do indeed have two nannies now. We were short one, admittedly! And several other wonderful people employed to help with Emilie and Brennan.

Also, I have had a fair amount of sleep and am feeling much better for it.

And now, back to the mysteries and uncertainty that is life here in Arx. Why does it appear so many people had the same dream? Surely it must mean something!

Relationship Note on Sabella

It is so nice to have Princess Sabella and Prince Niklas back in the city! Although Princess Sabella has really upped her hugging skills -- I will have to train long and hard to make sure that I remain the Best Hugger in Arx.

So watch out, everyone!

HUGS INCOMING.

Civilization is not limited to one group and alien to another. Civilization is something built in layers, social contracts that we all agree to so that we can operate, secure in the knowledge that there are certain actions that can be expected (do not murder, do not steal, do not break one's oath) and therefor we can function as a society rather than as paranoid individuals. I am speaking here in gross generalities of course, as you must when discussing the topic of whole swaths of people.

To think that shav'arvani are entirely uncivilized is ridiculous. Their customs might be different -- customs are different all throughout the Compact -- but customs are not what civilization is built upon. I posit that civilization boils down to a single thing, upon which everything else is based:

Respect.

If we have respect for one another we do not commit murder. If we have respect for someone, we do not steal from them. We do not lie to them. Of course there are (Again, when dealing with as fractious a subject as humanity, there are nearly infinite permutations) going to be disagreements between what rules should be followed, who is allowed to make the rules, who must follow them and so on. But in my mind the big three, the ones upon which all other things hinge is: Murder is bad. Stealing is bad. Lying is bad. Violating those tenets, (and really, I would challenge anyone to show me a society or people in which those three things are not the paramount sins,) are what breaks down the bonds of society and therefore civilization.

Respect can come in many forms, it is as subjective as anything else.

I regret missing the Salon discussion on redemption. I wanted to learn many things from the people there. Herein are thoughts I wished to explore.

Redemption brings to my mind acts that call for judgement after a time of contrition. I may give pardon or punishment - deciding if my vassal is reformed or capable of reform. This also happens on a personal level. I may decide whether someone who has wronged myself or others has reformed. I do not think the path of redemption is about this. I think it is a holy judgement about the life of a person after contrition and not something I decide. It is about what happens after an act of sin and not about what happens after mere crime or abuse. It happens on a different level.

Yet I am not a scholar of the pantheon and hoped to learn where my mistakes in judgement are by testing them at the gathering.
