The Princess Jaenelle Velenosa library in Lenosia freely allows people to borrow the written works they hold without requiring them to offer charity in which they themselves might not have to give. I am very proud to have a namesake such as the second largest library.

I wonder if the people of Arx know about the Great Archives in the Capital and how hard the Faith works at offering what they do. For free. Without a shopkeeper hired.

Relationship Note on Tescelina

In the smallest city on the farthest shore, a beggar follows me home and demands a story. I gather words in my cupped hands like water scooped from a mountain spring and remind her that when we were girls, the seraphim stole me onto a caravel travelling beyond the coast. "They forbade me to leave my cabin at night, but I snuck to the deck and discovered glittering stars not only in the sky, but in the sea as well, in the air all around. We sailed through a fog of starlight."

Behind your ship, Mistress, the wake spreads so artfully that every ripple follows a comet's path, and your masts and sails repeat the order of the constellations. Your captain's log faithfully corresponds to the firmament, and thus the ship and the sky always reflect each other precisely.

In praising your crew, the beggar says, "Feeling yourselves part of an undying heaven, gears in a meticulous astrological clock, you take care not to make the slightest change in your ship and your habits. This is the only place I know where the wise remain motionless in time. The only place where eternity exists."

Your officers stare at one another, dumbfounded by the wretch's ignorance. To their trained eyes, the novelty of every moment is obvious: the whistle of a midshipwoman newly arrived on her watch, the arrhythmic slap of the dinghy against the starboard hull.

"Our ship and our stars correspond so perfectly that any change on the deck is entangled with a similar transformation in the firmament. The heavens are not unchanging, and neither are we. Quite the opposite; we are fated by the one who defeated Skald to never stop choosing, never stop changing. That is why our most precious cargo is not the tonnage of butterfly-silk or dragon-milk, but the girl in the steward's cabin who, having read all her books, sneaks to the deck every night and raises stars from the waves."

I find myself a bit paralyzed by the patronage offers I've received since Zara and Tikva's fair. I'm grateful for all the options, and many patrons clearly bring a lot to the table. This feels like a big decision, even if it may not be, in the grand scheme of things. Must think on this a bit more... over the rest of this lemon bar.

Preparations never cease. I watch the flowers spring up in the garden with a decided need to organize and build, to develop and to explore. Instead, I am permitted to sit on this pretty bench by the Mother Mercy's wise advice.

I hate sitting still. How the household puts up with me in this state of dudgeon, when energy threatens to spindle and bleed every which way, is beyond me. I appreciate their forbearance and thank the gods someone has the tolerance for sitting still, and enduring the trials of sitting still, that I evidently lack.

Now that I've spun up the hundred adventures I wish to take, the many pathways I yearn to travel along, the books to seek and topics to search, I am /stymied./ Is there no one to which I can offload some of these questions?

Alas.

It has been two years since we recovered Crusader, the ancient blade of the Templars. The blade once held by the men who led our crusades and were known as Sword of the Faith, in a time many of our great stories come from.

We had thought that might be itself an end to a journey - and I owe so many thanks for their work, from Prince Alaric and Dame Mercedes, Princess Alarissa and the Order of East Light, Mother Ailith - and of course my beloved sister Dame Thena and her Knights of Solace such as Sir Jeffeth. We were wrong. A blade alone does not restore the Templars or unify them. Though we have not boasted of its return, it is no secret and Templars knew. And still Templars fell under the sway of the Heretic of Fireside. They could not believe sufficiently in the cause, they could not sufficiently place aside their doubts or parochial ways. Many of those Templars now undergo penance. I hope they will learn from their stumble. Others will never know our love again.

This and other things have proven we needed to do more. The killing of Templars and Godsworn by nobles. The desecration of places of sanctuary. So for the last year or so we have tried to recover more of our past, the stories and deeds of those who we remember now in legend. We have recovered a small part, and from that seed a mighty oak will rise. And it’s roots will tear up the mud around our feet that has for so long held us and dulled our action.

I won't say that looking into the heroes of our past is an easy task. This would belittle the countless hours, days, weeks and even years that our dedicated scholars have put into uncovering even the smallest scraps of truth to the old legends. It is easy, however, to walk through the Hall of Heroes and see the poses the statues have been made in, or read the plaques, and become inspired by such small snippets.

There is nothing wrong with taking inspiration from the past and using it a goal, an ideal to pursue, a guiding light for the life you live now.

But we can't just fight for the past honors, the past glories, the past loves and victories. We have to live for our present and our future.

So this, my beloved Compact, is what I ask of you. Send me a messenger and let me know when we can talk. I want to hear from you. I want to hear what you love the most in this life. What would you fight for? What would you defend? What do you find joy and passion in? I want to hear about you. Commoner, noble, doesn't matter. I want to hear the stories of our Compact.

Yours in Service to the Crown,
Dame Imi Deadfall

I would like to offer an apology to Aurora, and say that the woman is one of the best Crafters we know. I was fast to accuse her of not having good business practices and said it was a bit akin to theft (which it's not) a while back and I realize that it was not the best way to handle the situation. I will try to do better when it comes to these things. I won't many any excuses about it, I also would like to recommend her business to anyone that would like to have some of the best attire that Arx can provide, as well as a new material that is wonderful as well as quite exquisite also!

One reads the names of those of nobility who have laid claim to shops within Arx and perhaps an eyebrow must be raised... until one reads on to see most are not even a generation away from their ennoblement. Ah, ah. It becomes clear, their weak grasp of what is fitting and what isn't. Perhaps a hundred years from now their descendants will have a better grasp of how to properly muster and direct charity, while shepherding their people to greater prosperity.

Relationship Note on Karadoc

You have been an exemplary Count in every respect. I name you now an exemplary husband as well, my lord. The words I wrote when we were first wed no longer stand. You've proven yourself in every regard superior to your predecessor. An equal... as I knew would eventually be the case, when Tehom blessed our union.

Our child will be a force to be reckoned with.

One thing I have learned, since adopting a crow into my life, is that a surfeit of greed will make the most beautiful of creations seem ugly and petty.

A little thirst for acquisition is civilized; a little native ambition, healthy. But when to have is a lust that burns unquenched, whatever you scrabble for in your black little claws looks much the same as any other scrap of glittery trash in your hoard.

I find that Binky, at least, will keep himself entertained by stealing walnuts most of the time.

Agreed in full! Not only that, but when that delicious feeling of self-righteousness is shared with other people...we feel so much closer to them. Bonding through our gossip and agreeing we are superior to those whom we are deriding. So comfortable, so easy....and why scandals are so very popular. I do not look fondly on the time when I was the scandal of the season and yet it is likely the most joy I have ever provided to so large a group of my peers.

I had the honor and privilege recently of performing Master, now Brother, Felix Meadson's Godsworn vowtaking ceremony. He has been an asset and an ally to the Knights of Solace since before I was even a fumbling squire in the Order, and he's been a friend to me for some time. I look forward to seeing where his path takes him.

I found carrots! He was hiding in the library. I think he finally got sick of Fairen's threats to be made into stew and took revenge on his books.

I have placed them strategically throughout the library, but I will still want to be a long way away when those nibbled books are discovered.

Ambition, a seed of an idea planted elsewhere that grew before it was passed on to us, where we nurtured it and made it bloom. And oh, such beauty resides in the North now. Floors of gold and a silver stage, murals and statues and life. A place for all to come and begin to hash out the harsh details of life.

The hard work of so many is what made it happen, and to stand in it takes your breath away. The world needs places like this, places of civilization and beauty, places to remind us what we struggle so hard for. What we can be.

So it begins.
