I've spent a full day in the chill of the Lowers in Autumn, with warm and spiced drink at hand, watching people celebrate and drag wagons, run wagons around. Seen mud churned and paving stones been made well. It's an interesting contest Mistress Josephine dreamed up, where dockworkers and wagonmasters come together and share the labours of their field, so we might turn it into a competition. Complete with the delivery of goods and parcels all over the place. They've been well compensated, of course. And near as I can tell, there were very few mishaps with the deliveries. I suppose people knew not to send heirlooms along to be delivered today in particular.

We had a spirited and good showing, and the finale turned into a bit of a nail-biter. The top three for the Run were Svana Grayhope at third, and I'm sure the Grayhopes will be well thrilled with her positioning, then Sydney the Waterfall coming in second - but don't worry if you thought she won, she was in high enough spirits for everyone.

Lore Artiglio took the title of Queen of Wagons for this year, and I was thrilled to give away the first Crown. More thrilled to watch people eat good food and turn this day into a feast day. To share in stories and community.

I see now, why it was so important to her, and I can't wait to host the rest of these contests.

I may have taken second in the wagon race, but not for a lack of effort from Mahogany. I swear, I don't know what I did to deserve that horse tolerating me half so well as she does.

It might be the fact that I keep sneaking her beer.

It's probably that I keep sneaking her beer.

Relationship Note on Yuri

I have never been to Fortezza di Iriscal, but if the food in La Rosa d'Ebano is any indication, I should make a culinary visit there as soon as possible.
Good company and delicious food is all one needs to escape the concerns engulfing us lately.
Lord Tessere has outdone himself in bringing a sample of the Fortezza to the city.

Thinking once more of hiring an investigator or a team of them, I can barely think some days with Ryland's fussing. I should have put the nursery on the other side of the house!

What was once thought to be nothing more than a passing night, the light of which gone as quickly as it was found, only to find it again in the autumn.
Mine winter is nearing only by temperance of which others will see, not of what shall actually be. Spring and Summer scream loudly for that is what is sought, neigh this sinking of waves lapping upon the chest.
Oy! A cry across the winds of which none bother to feel, yet for one. A lone tree, massive, and strong. Holding up the coverage of safety from all of the storms, from which I can build a shield and club.
No more will the masses tell me what I can and cannot do.
The passing night's orb traded for warmth and breath.
Forever left with simply...
Mine.

Four paintings made in nearly as many days. That will be all for now, at least on that particular subject.

I've put off another for long enough.

Relationship Note on Nina

I have had the opportunity to work with Nina Autumndale many times. She is a talented musician and tailor, and wears nothing that is not immediately a trend from Ischia to Setarco. Most recently she agreed to join me in hosting a private party in the palace at Braiga, where she carried it from one splendid moment to the next.

Nina's music creates ripples of welcome, swells of excitement, and brief lulls of contentment. To be in her company at Braiga is to be on a voyage of music, dance and merriment. I was pleased to see Prince Patrizio Pravus and Princess Valencia Velenosa dancing to the melodies she conducted.

Spellbound I watched my sister and cousin perform the blade dance of Ischia, and, though I had no part in it, I felt immense pride in the reaction of our guests who witnessed that alchemy of grace, ferocity and fire. Nor did Prince Sebastian and Princess Adrienne forgo the opportunity to display the unsurpassed elegance of Houses Pravus and Valardin in the arts of dance.

It was an honor to host Sir Corban Telmar, who dazzled the duelists and pirates of the Seraceni court with conduct giving irrefutable proof of the merits born from the chivalric tradition by which he lives. It is my hope that guests from Tor, New Hope, and the Fortezza di Iriscal enjoyed themselves as much as I did. I shall spare my dance partners the infamy of being associated with my name, but I am grateful for their charity, and only regret that my skill is leagues behind that of the rest of my family.

When scholars of the future seek answers to how the diverse peoples of the Compact came together to cast down the might of the false prophet and his minions, they will find amid the records of oaths, treaties and alliances, the name of Nina Autumndale, whose arts wove together disparate threads of power into an invincible tapestry of hope.

Freedom exists where the happiness of all depends on the happiness of the weakest.

Slavery exists where people condone the disadvantage of one for the good of another.

If there comes an age at which we have the answers to how to react in every situation, I believe I should like to know how long I have to wait before it comes. Remind me to ask one of our longer-lived allies.

a very short list of very very terrible things you cannot tell a higher-ranking noble at a certain meeting that's maybe tomorrow and I certainly did not drink-think about it at all until I --

( Sorry, Scholar. )

1. "Sure. Surprise me."
2. "You need more climbing trees, please."
3. "I'll never wear muddy boots to any courtly function -- especially at dinners."
4. "No. Too knightly to scout, too restless to knight, not really an archer either buuuut -- hey -- I'm still an asset."

5. "I said ass, didn't I?"

I saved a life today, Scholar.
At least, it seems like I did.

And I spent a good amount of time speaking kindly of others. Sending missives to sing praises. I made an attempt to connect some people. Then I was told my friendship is practically synonymous with fame.

What? Oh, is there still a bit of blood on me? My apologies.

There is a lot on my mind lately, but I can see you're uncomfortable now that you've noticed the blood. I'll leave you be.

I do enjoy a good voyage. After spending the majority of my life landlocked - truly, until the past couple of years - it's still quite the novelty to cruise the waves, particularly as dozen-odd years of drink have given me plenty of resistance to caring about feeling dizzy. Fine company certainly never hurts the prospects, either.

Regardless, a pleasure to have my feet squarely in Arx again.

Time to catch up on the word about town, and that means grabbing a sip at the local taverns and bars, or perhaps a spar is in order.

Relationship Note on Caprice

I would be remiss if I never wrote about my incredibly kind and talented patron, Caprice Artiglio. Seemingly always blessed with inspiration, she is brimming with ideas and thoughtful contributions. A crafter who uplifts and inspires. A steadfast friend, even after she's seen a person at their worst.

This city could do with more like her.

It was the first time that I have worn a dress and didn't obscure my left side. I don't know that I would have done so for any other two men. To be fair, I wore a false arm that was crafted witch such care by Master Apollo and one couldn't see anything but the scars that the Marquessa Reigna has long since tended to.

I will be making a donation for the gown and jewelry that I was so graciously permitted to keep. Tuck it away and wear another time, once it has spent the appropriate amount of time on display in the crossroads. But it was divine and I felt...

Beautiful.

So many gold coins melted. It's made some people mildly uneasy. I don't know what I'll do with this when I'm done with it.
