Relationship Note on Zakhar

there's something to be said for an autumn sky and a beach to stand upon; when you gave me your keepsake and I gave you my answer. How young I feel when I see it. It cracks the shell of this old muscle, and reveals its shiny pearl. Not of white, or black or brown, not of silver hue. It reveals a precious blue; one of a kind, colored like the sky. It whispers of the sea. It whispers there is a child here still, and tells me you still have managed to find something unique. So I give my answer, and you suffer for it gratefully. Like the waves give their rumbles as they meet the shore, my answer will continue to be always yes. You've found your pearl of blue; a one of a kind. It continues to be yours until the sea becomes a mirror for the sun, and the waves no longer rise within their boundaries.

A much lighter entry than my last: Arx's - and my - first Bravura Exclusive was a great success. We honored Joscelin Arterius and celebrated arts and crafts of all sorts, helped by no small number of artisans, models and sponsors. I hope Count Amadeo is as pleased by the results as I am, and that everyone who attended enjoyed themselves. I count myself amongst the unfortunate who never met Joscelin when she was here, but through the lasting, positive impression she left on so many, I certainly understand a number of ways why she was the perfect person to celebrate at this event.

Savio Pontelaeus provided a beautiful song honoring artists, Samira Culler and my own cousin, Lore, had gorgeous paintings on display. Some of Joscelin's work was donated for viewing too, both from Apollo Whisper's personal collection and from Talia Baseborn as part of the show. Lottie Parkins earned her fame yet again as an accomplished caterer.

Apollo, Decius Meridus, Georgine Dubois, Ripley Thornburn, Talia, Vashtalyn Andalashari and Zakhar all proved their quality with the pieces they provided for the fashion show, and I was delighted that my own work could share the catwalk with a piece Dame Ida Ferron recreated, originally gifted to Joscelin.

Princess Alarissa Thrax, Amanita Whisper, Anisha Whisper, Princess Sabella Grayson, Marquessa Sunniva Harthall and Lady Zoey Kennex all handled modeling duty brilliantly and I have an expanded list of people to tap for future projects. I even had a short but thrilling stroll down the catwalk wearing Ripley's pig pendant, some lovely Artshall tweed and a Bravura hat; I believe Count Amadeo caught some interest while wearing Zakhar's corset vest and I for one am looking forward to seeing more of those about the city, soon.

Lastly, I was grateful to learn of so many willing to support the arts through sponsoring the event, namely Houses Blackram, Fidante, Harthall, Kennex and Thrax, the Whisper House, the Society of Explorers and naturally, the Crafters Guild.

The importance of what artists and craftsmen do for our society can't be overstated and yet, I think their work is so ubiquitous it can be easy to forget to show them our gratitude. What a fantastic way to be reminded!

Relationship Note on Duarte

What a beautiful evening at the Crossroads Casino. Beautiful people. Beautiful crafts. The most beautiful clothes I have yet seen in Arx! Count Duarte put together a good show. I was honored to perform a song and will record it here, to remember the evening and to commit to the Journals an ode to those who create.

There are some who find the arts to be an inane waste of time
As though passion and creative heart might be some sort of crime
With love and understanding for our grim, pragmatic neighbors
Tonight we raise a glass and song to all creative labors!

Artists, you truly know this world is hard and cold and dark
And through your art defy the night with bright, unfailing spark
Beauty, truth, and insight are the tools with which you work
And in this inspired undertaking, you gift to life its worth

Here's to the poets, the painters, and singers
To the infinite journey, the masters, beginners
Here's to the jewelers, the sculptors, the writers
To the luminous dreamers, who make the world brighter

All those who endeavor to create, with your setbacks and success
Tonight we celebrate your path, and the gift that you possess
Your works are perfect, valid, true, and of yourselves, be forgiving
Your art informs, restores, explores, and it's what makes life worth living!

Have you ever seen a High Lady and a Duke successfully log roll across a lake together?

I have.

That was definitely a thing that happened.

Aside from all the lethal traps and near drownings, that was a productive and enjoyable expedition in the wilds of Artshall. Unless the artifacts are indeed cursed. I believe that they aren't. Like I explained to Uncle Norwood, they were in a crate sunk in a pristine lake, not a fetid bog of corruption. They should be fine.

I'll begin to worry only when the savage woodpeckers attack.

Finally, my latest work is finished and I return to the world once again to take care of the more mundane things. Such as food. And coin. And perhaps even human interaction.

Relationship Note on Gabriella

I must hire better messengers. He said he had delivered the message to the Princess herself. Do not see how that was possible with her back in the city only very recently. I feel shamed my words ever cast her in a poor light, and must remind myself my name is not like it was back in Leonica. Some patience is needed to be practiced.

1. What are you afraid of?
Bovines.. As strange as it might sound. They creep me out, their blank stares.. the way they seem to just wait for the slaughter. I mean sure they taste good but still.. just creepy.

Though another answer might be failure: Failing my friends and my family, Failing myself.. Failing to leave a legacy.

2. What are your opinions of honor?
There is no one right and proper answer on what Honor is or what it means. We all have our own views and perceptions of honor and what is honorable.
What is honorable in Setarco may not always be so in the Chain and vice versa.. In the end honor is what we make it.

3. What path do you see for yourself?
A path that twists and may diverge but in the end it will always come together once more. Weaving through the world and into the unkown.

4. You can give one piece of advice to someone who really needs it. What do you tell them?
You are loved, by more than you know. Never forget that. And while all might not say it, you can tell by the look in their eyes and the weave of their words.

and of course, never forget.. To take everything.

Relationship Note on Orland

1. What are you afraid of?

This answer is as clear to me as a winter's night sky. The thing I fear most is not loneliness, suffering or even death; two of which I had long endured and the latter I have shaken hands with and stared into its eyes. No, what I fear most is not living up to the expectations I have set upon myself and that others have come to expect. I would without a second thought endure more years of captivity to make sure I never knew the feeling of letting someone down.

2. What are your opinions of honor?

The honoring of thyself allows one to have honor for others. Fore if you do not honor thyself first, you are unclear of what honor is. Hold steadfast to your beliefs and understand that until proven otherwise by words or actions, you are no better than anyone else and your respect should be given.

3. What path do you see for yourself?

I find myself in a forest with many paths diverging, all of them winding into the deep undergrowth, their destinations unclear. They are all labeled with various titles such as family, professional ambition and things of that nature. My only hope is that in the end they all converge so that I will have all that I seek in my life. It is this hope that will start me walking...the hope that in the end I will fine myself finally content and my soul at peace.

4. What advice would you give to one who really needs it?

Hope is simply patience with the lamp lit, thus hope is never truly lost, but it is up to you to decide if you will follow it. As dim as the light may be, everything has a crack in which the light will find a way through to pierce the darkness. No matter how dark it grows, keep your eyes fixated on the light and keep walking until the light is so bright you must shield your eyes.

Today's tea was an elderberry tea, with spices, honey and fruit and a hint of nuts. Very tasty and it goes well with ginger cake.

Who am I kidding? Everything goes well with ginger cake.

Relationship Note on Brigid

*appended to this journal entry is a verse penned in a feminine hand*

Vellichor, in your enlightened name I pray:
Enlarge my understanding of this world;
Let me see it;
Steady me when I stand before the unknown;
Let me know it.
Edify my mind, my heart, my wits;
Let me remember it.

Brigid Moore, the Lady Dragoon of Acorn Hill, is my protege. Her exploits in the Oathlands are the stuff of books to be read at the fireside to your children and children's children. Soon she will become Lady Brigid Inverno and travel to Caina, an island as foreign to us as Lenosia would be in the Bonespire. I will admit that I took significant and selfish pleasure in first hearing the news, merely to know that we would be gaining her drive and intelligence. But make no mistake, she is doing something so very hard, leaving her home for another so strange if welcoming for the good of the Compact. I know House Inverno will thrive from having her perspective, and I look forward to seeing how the Lady Dragoon grows to meet this newest challenge.

Relationship Note on Orland

My quill follows in the wake of my protege's.

1. What are you afraid of?

Losing my edge. Becoming a domesticated pet unworthy of the traditions with which I've been entrusted.

2. What are your opinions of honor?

Honor is living out one's sacred oath: humanity's greatest strength.

3. What path do you see for yourself?

A nightmare unleashed on the enemies of Seraceni, Pravus and the Compact. Prosperity for the people of Ischia. Fame. Wealth. A violent death and a better successor.

4. You can give one piece of advice to someone who really needs it. What do you tell them?

Take everything.

I've taken to painting.

The things I've painted so far are unlikely to bring peace to anyone. They are not the kind of things that one gazes at to be happy, to bring their mind some respite from the chaos of their own life. They are not things that should belong in one's life.

But they bring me peace. As I look upon the result of my work, I dare say I am even happy. For after grasping at ill-fitting words to describe, to have painted it, to have found another way to describe that which has till now only been an amalgam of ill-fitting words... It is relief.

I have one more work in mind, though whether it is sculpture or painting, I'm not sure yet. One more, and then I shall devote myself on that which makes me human. A collection on loss.

All those questions. Some beliefs I hold to firmly, and keep close, they are personal. Some concepst may vary according to what events are pressing upon one, shifting perspective, erroding memories of the past or have arrived freshly in one's attention. Rather than waver or prevaricate, I'll keep such answers to some questions to myself.
