I am forever impressed how some speak of tradition and use it to claim rights of independence when they only seem to wish to do it to resist the defence of our traditions.

Nobility, order, fealty, propriety. These things have always had a collective side to them. We have always together had to defend them. No house in the Isles has more reason to guard its independence more than Tyde, and yet I find nothing threatening in Prince Victus’ edict.

Relationship Note on Tescelina

I did not know you, we never met. But I've heard many wonderful stories about you and I can tell you were a great friend. You will be missed, Lady Tescelina, but I have no doubt that your memory will live on.

A duty done, a happier end than I ever hoped. I have so often found the worst that only a small part of me dared hope for the best. When the truth became known, it burst. Tears of happiness, a happiness that has returned to me every day refreshed since.

Relationship Note on Tescelina

News of Tescelina Wyrmguard's passing caught up to my party on the way south, the day before Arx came into sight on the distant horizon. I remember the tiny, countless pinpricks of starlight in the sky overhead as the sun sank. We had talked once about those bright, clear stars in the north, seen from the height of Aviaron's Peak, but we never did make that journey together to see them. It's so common to promise journeys and delights to others, and never manage to bring them to fruition. I regret that now.

I didn't know her well enough to mourn. But I pray for her family's peace, and smile to think that she has found her own.

Relationship Note on Dycard

People have returned from Sungreet, and new information still seems to be tickling in. Just when I thought an opinion had formed, something changed my entire perspective. I feel fortunate that nobody wants or expects an opinion from a silly little flower girl, so I can take my time soaking in all the information.

But there's one thing I know for sure - I am so, so glad that you made it back alive, Lord-Captain.

Relationship Note on Poppy

Lady Poppy responded to the journal by Prince Sirius Valardin better than I ever could.

I stared at his entry for a long while, pondering how to respond because I knew that I wanted to. While still trying to figure it out, Lady Poppy replied. A reply that, honestly? Warms my heart. We did not grow up in the same part of the Northlands, but her experiences mirror my own.

The people I was surrounded by as I grew were the kindest, most compassionate people I have ever met. Resilient, yes, but not just in body - in mind and in spirit too. Patient. Unshakeable. It's nice to know that despite the blistering cold, there is a warmth unlike any other to be found back North if I ever need it.

And I'll take the warmth of people over warm weather any day.

On a rare occasion, it seems, the pen just may be mightier than the sword - if that pen is a diamondplate quill, at least.

Praise be to Vellichor, who encourages us to write even the ugliest of our thoughts down for the historical record, even if they are buried in the Blacks and wisely so.

Praise to Him for collecting and treasuring all of it, even that which when reread by the light of day seems foolish, and makes us ashamed of having sunk to our baser emotions.

I think if I was born in the Mourning Isles, I would have been squeezed tighter - perhaps I would have taken a better shape, perhaps it would have reduced me to curds and whey.

How many times must we express our opprobrium of Duke Ivan before we are taken at our word? Our heralds are getting quite exhausted.

I don't do this often, but I want to clear something up.

When Ivan Helianthus and the rebels talk about the 'traditions' of the Mourning Isles, they mean thralldom.

I know that mainlanders think the Mourning Isles are just about sailing and thralldom, but there's a lot more to having salt in your blood than that.

This isn't about vassals' rights, or preserving our proud heritage, or honoring our grandfathers and great-grandfathers who fought in some war, or remembering our history, or protecting an idealized way of life. It's about thralls.

So let's just call it what it is.

One hundred soldiers for each Great House. One hundred soldiers split across every House below them. It is not enough to protect against tens of thousands that rage.

The restrictions placed upon retinue and fortifications were good for their time, but are now a relic that has outlived its usefulness. If we are to ensure our safety in the capital of this Compact, then we must return to the old ways.

Many will have seen Mother Ailith's proclamation - what I wish to focus on are two things.

Choice, and duties.

It is true, many nobles who looked to Sungreet have a choice now. To stand with their duties to Ivan, or their duties to Thrax, to the Compact and to the Gods. I would argue that each of us has a fundamental duty to the Gods, and their representatives on Arvum in the Faith. I would argue that a man who breaks the laws of the Gods is not deserving of loyalty. I would recognise that a conflict of duties has arisen - one not forseen or forseable, and that no fault rests on those nobles for this dispute arising or the fact they must now face this choice. It is always a tragedy when this occurs - and a hard choice. I wish the nobles good guidance and fortune in making it - and though I will respect that choice, I gently observe that to side with the Eurusi elements is to side against the Faith and the Gods, and so to become an enemy.

For those Seraphs - for those Brothers and Sisters whom I love, as the only family I know - who wish to play and try to balance on the fence in this issue. Those who wish to argue perhaps that the duty to an Apostate is greater than a duty to the Gods, you pull at a delicate thread in our history. You must be trusted to give honest advice, and you must also advocate for the Faith - you have a difficult balance as the Legate indicates. I know the difficulties - for ours is the Faith, a consideration beyond the temporary, that we have no interest in the matters of Kings and Queens, the crowds and furs, that we are called to think of higher matters and beyond the physical state of our people to their very souls. It would be easy then to perhaps forget the immediate consequences of our advice. But let me help you and be clear: to advocate /against/ the Faith to attempt to curry personal favour is beyond that balance you wish to seek. To advocate for Ivan is to advocate for Eurus. To advocate for Eurus is to advocate for Marachian-like ways. And I would remind them carefully of the last time a Carnifex of the Faith faced Godsworn who would advocate even the preservation of such beliefs, and how that Carnifex would create a chilling reminder that our service to the Gods and Faith must always be paramount, in the form of the Silent Reflections.

So my Brothers and Sisters. Make your choices, but make them wisely.

It has been an incredibly busy week! Lord Porter and Dame Bree's fundraiser at the Tragedy was hilarious and a wonderful way to spend an evening and a very worthwhile endeavor to donate to so if you missed it do seek them out and offer some help! Then the rock painting event at the Shrine of Jayus was just fantastic and I am amazed at the creativity of everyone that participated and delight in seeing new rocks added to the wall daily! So if you did not have a chance to stop by while the event was happening you can do so at your leisure, all the supplies are still there!

And to top it all off I received the most amazing belated birthday present from the King! A gorgeous tiara that I will most certainly be wearing all fall! Prince Niklas is already making plans to model our entire wardrobe around it, so I am very grateful and appreciative the King has such fantastic taste!

I have embarked on a new path of research. It's a bit scary and kind of exciting at the same time. I suspect I already know the answer to the questions I seek, but the possibilities are there, it opens up new prospects for me, perhaps. But, then again, maybe not.

That's the thing about research - the uncertainty if you can ever truly find answers to the questions you seek.

Relationship Note on Thorn

A Ward of Fidante in title, but she has established herself as part of my family. As such, she is held to the same standards in my eyes as any of my nieces; and each time, she meets it. Thorn is the kind of Wild Child I had imagined myself having as a daughter, when I was a young man, and now that I have met with her, spoken with her, I could confirm it to the whole of Arvum that she is not just wild and free; but deeply invested into the soil of Tor, literally and figuratively. Her wisdom lays in plants and the truth of the earth, rather than people, and besides? She, knows the Secret of the Best Roses.

This woman, one of my nieces, is like a light in a cavern. She does not show her full hand, but she is still a light in the dark, enough so as to bring one comfort, safety, and some small amount of joy just by existing. Her mind is sharp, and her will is strong.

Relationship Note on Calista

The Duchess of Tor, MY Duchess, and my beloved sister's daughter. One of them, but the one who most reminds me of my sister. She is the epitome of Tor, and what it means to be Fidante. Cunning, wise, she loves her people as if they are not just her people, but family. Fidante.
