Arriving at the objective good requires exacting impartiality, something that, in many instances, is contrary to the interests of one's in-group relations.

My bear-child, Lady Jael Laurent, is married. I am amazed at the time that has passed and the beautiful, strong, and valiant woman she has grown into.

Perhaps this is where I will stop, as the scholar has just offered me the use of a handkerchief.

Relationship Note on Karadoc

I did not love you.

I tolerated your inclination towards lounging, your use of haze and other things. I respected your tenacity (always a surprise, given your laziness), and admired your eye for quality. Your ability to rub silver together and breed more was a thing to marvel at. We shared a common vision of the future, you never failed to kindle when I would describe what I meant to build-- our passion for each other was fueled with visions of fertile fields, new villages, the thump and rattle of my cloth mills, the looms they carry inside.

You did whatever I ever asked of you, without failing or hesitation, and most importantly, you have given me the child I wanted. The only thing I ever wanted, the only gift I asked you for, finer than the gowns and jewelry you showered me with. The greatest jewel you've ever granted me, it sleeps beneath my heart.

I did not love you but I was proud to be your wife, and knew you as my equal. I pray our child has your wicked mind and provoking smile. Your legacy will be one of cleverness, of growth, of passion.

They will know their father, and I will not know a better husband.

I went to the Great Archive to see what plays they may have. The selection was sorely lacking. Are they somewhere I am overlooking I wonder.

My skills for writing are laughably terrible. Not at all in the right way. I had wondered if I could find a good play to put on and get others to help. Not so easy it seems.

Several people have asked my thoughts on the embargo. If you want to be succesful as a merchant you need to be able to adept to the market conditions as they are and as they change no matter the cause or the reasoning behind them. The abrupt end of the legal supply of fireweave has caused a massive surge in demand for for substitutes such as the cardian steelsilk with many people expressing concerns that Cardia may be subject to sanctions next which could starve the heavy demand any and all legal supplies. This has caused a frenzy of stockpiling driving up the price of Cardian Steelsilk even beyond that of the exceedingly precious and rare dragonweep and I expect precious few tailors will get their hands on the fabric in the coming months.

Fashion is far away from what I'm comfortable talking about but I would not be surprised if the lack of textile supply might lead to a shift to leather in the forms of the so called shadowmeld leather as well as cardian snakeskin and I've started importing the latter while it's still cheap.

I have started to begin work on a project that I hope will be not only well received by the people of the Mourning Isles, but also generate possible jobs for ex-thralls, as well as offer anyone in the Mourning Isles a place to come to study medicine, and to learn how to care for the sick. I am deeply thankful for the Mother Mercy and Count Turo Navegant's support in this endeavor. Without them I would not have been able to start on this.

It is natural for nobles to try and champion one or more trends within our society in order to gain the political power granted by its supporters - to champion the ultra-orthodox in the Oathlands, the pro-Thrall groupings in the Isles, the forest houses of Grayson or one of many others. Indeed, you may even be able to shift and steer those groups a little in doing so. But to try and hold so many positions, and publicly, in a short period of rule will not earn you the loyalty of any of those groups - just their ridicule. One can be pragmatic and feign principles, but in feigning them you must keep up the pretence or be proven as the hollow vessel you may well be.

Marigold symbolize pain and grief to those that study the meanings of flowers.

However, I think the delightful flower is wrongly maligned. For in times of hardship, it can provide sustenance. For the injured with shallow cuts, a poultice made from this flower can protect against infection. The beautiful golden color is often used in dyes that are looking to transfer it's bright countenance. Oil extracted from it's petals can be later used as a base in cosmetics. There are so many uses. None of them bring pain or grief upon the subject.

It is always helpful, from time to time, to have someone to revel in the Thirteenth and his worship to the point that they forget their obligations to the other Gods, and so the dangers in such can be made clear. No God stands alone. Each, including the Thirteenth, has its place within the Pantheon. One can champion one God without forgetting the others, and our obligations to that. If we should forget that, then you may commit terrible acts and feel justified in doing so. To pursue a just outcome without regard to the means, an honourable battle without regard to the impact, to enrich your domain but without the binding of oaths to keep you honest....

You must study each of them. Not stare solely into the mirror, which may help you understand yourself, but not all answers are within. Some you must find from others.

Pookie,

I am desperately trying. Brenlin refuses to show me missives and reports - so you have a co-conspirator here to ensure I... relax.

I am so inactive I have naught a single tale to tell of my holiday...

I woke. I ate. I lazed around. Oh, there's a lovely tree...

I will bore you to tears with my lack of adventure.

I hope you are plotting fun things to talk about when I return for I have ... nothing.

Perhaps something exciting will turn up!

I am often too busy to truly miss my home, but Tor is always on my mind and always in my heart. Our labor of love failed to produce the intended outcome, but instead revealed something else, something I was not expecting and something which is truly spectacular. I have always wanted to inspire hope and strength in others like those who inspired me.

When we first began this journey, our goal was radiant and the idea was to be inclusive. Both Fidante and the Apothecary College worked tirelessly to make our dream a reality. The attempts proved fruitless. But finally, we started to see something bloom. While it is not what we had hoped for, it is everything we need.

Have you ever witnessed the rising dawn of Tor?

So many roses, not enough thorns, I say. But, according to the Rose Cipher written by my cousin, Juliet Fidante, a thorn-less rose is a symbol of love at first sight; one may pair this with the complimentary color to strengthen the sentiment. For example, A lavender rose without thorns. Now, imagine my embarrassment when I first learned of this after gifting King Alaric numerous arrangements of roses without thorns while he was stricken in coma. To be young and naive again.

Relationship Note on Karadoc

I did not like him terribly much when we first met, but he was clever and did not overpromise.

I did not like the sharp tongue directed at others (or tea fights started in my shop). But he did not look through me, as so many others do.

But I did very much like the calm. I liked the hope that children would not grow up in a house of chaos. I liked that the household is...was a place of peace if not passion. I think that sometimes the value of that seems to be overlooked of late.

But when I saw the relief and hope in my beloved sister's eyes when she found out that the secret worry carried so long could now be lifted from her shoulders--in that moment I loved him. At least until the next time he opened his mouth!

We will have many things to teach and tell your son or daughter when they finally come, my lord, but I promise you that you won't be forgotten either. I am so sorry you won't see how your strengths will surely be woven into them. Tessere is stronger now because of you. And two more children will keep growing, one with us, one because you shielded him from his father's fate. I wonder how the world will change?

I feel so numb. But is is time to go back to work.

The practice of taking thralls strengthens the Compact, and civilizes the shavs, and should be encouraged--and, in fact, mandated by the crown--instead of being opposed and limited. Even the briefest reflection reveals two benefits:

1) Shavs are benighted and backward peoples. They refuse to join the Compact, which is not only a repository of culture and wisdom, but our best defense against the forces of destruction. Shav are, by definition, uncivilized. They are lost children, without the guidance of the faith and the crown. To claim they are in any way our equal is to claim that our obedience to the crown and the faith does not elevate us. This is wrong. Shavs are debased by their estrangement from the Compact ... yet this doesn't mean they are utterly without value or hope for redemption. Quite the contrary. They are called 'Abandoned,' but we must not abandon them. We must save them, redeem them, and raise them from savagery. And there is no better tool by which to achieve that than thralldom. Let them join us as free people if they choose; if not, we must act with the firm hand of the strict, loving parent, and set them firmly upon the correct path.

2) This will not only redeem the shavs but--far more importantly--strengthen the Compact. Thralldom is a mighty weapon in our battle against forces which seek to overthrow us. Not only for the valuable labor thralls perform, though that is not insignificant. No; taking thralls strengthens the Company in uncountable ways, from the lowest rungs of society to the highest. The proof is in our own city. Former thralls are now nobles of high rank, far above a common wretch like myself. Former thralls founded an entire noble house, with resources and power far beyond that of our own people of the lower boroughs. Many nobles owe their current position to thralldom, and we all owe thralldom for the many, many contributions they make to the strength of the Compact. Every time a former thrall, or the descendent of one, acts in support of the crown, by force of arms, scholarship, art, faith, or in any other way, we all accrue another debt to the institution of thralldom.

And what is the objection? That thralldom is unpleasant. This is true. However, many things are unpleasant and while infants avoid discomfort, adults understand that sometimes we must sacrifice for the greater good.

Dreams lately have not been very enjoyable, restless and filled with terror. And now, even when I thought it was a good dream, it was something else instead. I hope we are able to find a way to stop whatever it is.

In the mean time, I really need to spend time with my family. I have been neglectful and distant. And that is not really me, I think my lack of sleep, and always being exhausted is making me grumpy and less inclined to be social.
