I have truly fit a year's worth of experiences into the last few weeks. Opportunities have been jumped at. Connections have been made. Things thought lost have been found. And maybe I'll eventually talk about all of that.

Right now, I want to focus on my gratitude. I am grateful to my wonderful friend who has stuck by me and never judged me for the things others might be unkind about, who seems to think I chose her as patron - but really she took a chance on me as protege, Lady Thea Malvici (who needs to throw around her Droungos General of Southport title more often - did you know she's General of the Phoenix Brigade? She is). Without her, there would have been no Golden Buckle Tourney to brighten spirits today.

Also, the tourney was made all the better by the contributions of Duke Harlan Ashford and Princess Valencia Velenosa. The duke provided the bull and animal handlers, while the princess offered her venue and made sure modifications tot he space were done in a timely fashion. Further, I need to thank Master Apollo Oakwood for his kindness in donating the door gifts and the prize - an ostentatious belt buckle. Further thanks goes to Lady Eirene Riven for coordinating medics that were onsite. Having such amazing help from all corners makes me feel like I must be doing something right.

Reader, if you see any of the riders out and about in the next few days, you should know that they are all amazing. They tried something new! They were brave and good-humored and impressive: Lady Thea Malvici, Lord Drake Wyvernheart, Princess Macda Grayson, Lady Neilda Saik, Mistress Asralyn, Archlector Hamish, Count Orrin Seliki, Count Domonico Magnotta, Scout Rowenova, and Lord Michael Bisland - with special congratulations to Lord Bisland for his astonishing win from lasting 19 seconds on the bull!

Lastly, thank you to everyone who came out to spectate. I'm so glad I had the chance to entertain you today. It was good to see so many in one place. A nice reminder of what it is that we aim to protect.

I enjoy time spent with my cousins - it reminds me of a youth I left behind for duty. Yet, i find each time it also reminds me how much I have changed, how like an ivy transplanted from a forest to a house, I grow just as before yet to a different shape. A different form beneath it all.

Bull riding is not easy. I still managed to do a decent showing though. Thirteen seconds ai managed. Perhaps that is an auspicious number. Who knows.

Thank the gods. The damned whirlpool is finally gone.

Time to take the Paramour back out to sea.

I care not who or what is responsible for that damnable whirlpool abating, but the timing of its impact on the market could not be better. Making coin stretch even a little bit further in the winter months is invaluable for those in the Lowers.

I'm honestly not quite certain of what to make of the bull riding competition - certainly, cow racing seems easier, more so when you don't have to deal with the pointy-bits being a threat to life and limb. Perhaps if there's a repeat, I could be persuaded to try my hand at it.

On the other hand, there's a good point to not being involved - being unencumbered for the evening lets you watch everything afoot. And her highness Valencia, gracious hostess as ever and kind friend that she is, showed me a fantastic spot for the next time I take in an event in her arena. Resolute doesn't seem to agree, but he is entitled to his opinions.

It was refreshing to get out for the opening festivities at the Dire Bee Lounge. Lady Laurent is a wonderful hostess, no surprise, and I have no doubts that the Lounge will turn out to be a successful endeavor.

In the various states of society, armies are recruited from very different motives.

Warriors are urged by the love of war. For them, the motivation is simple: war is a fascination to them, one for which they have been rewarded and punished alternately by the hands of the Gods.

Free citizens are prompted by a principle of duty. For them, the motivation is belonging: they are encouraged to engage in service to be part of the group body of loyal participants in the protection of their freedoms.

Subjects of authority are animated by necessity. For them, the motivation is survival: without their liege or his favor they and their families may be deprived of what little they have, and thus be forced into crime or a worse station.

For the remainder -- the timid but luxurious inhabitants of a declining kingdom -- they must be allured into the service by the hopes of profit, or compelled by the dread of punishment.

The Golden Buckle tournament turned out far better than I or Medeia would have planned. And I had so much fun. I did. I learned I'm not great on a saddle and definitely need some lessons. Not like that scholar, don't look at me like that! Have a bull plushie....

Relationship Note on Michael

The bull was brought to the Hart,
there'll be blood, whiskey and song.
Where men and women grit and sweat,
to see whose ride will go long.

First up the lovely Ladies,
mounting up for their quickly ride.
Halters on and knuckles white,
striding for victory and pride.

Next up the bucking bull,
as they drive men to the dirt.
Clinging on to make the time,
sometimes getting worse than hurt.

The brave young Lord Michael Bisland settles in,
rope tight around his hand.
So lonely there atop this girth,
but has to make his stand.

Does he chance this ride on death,
so grand is the first prize.
Having to ride with all he has,
there's thunder between his thighs.

The mighty bull snarls,
as the mirth turns to a hush.
Every eye upon the two,
as the crowd waits for the rush.

And then at the end of the day,
the time tallied, the wounds tended,
a new champion hailed, relations mended,
and in Michael's hands -- the Champion's Buckle lifted.

At the Winter Golden Buckle Tourney, I did not win, but I managed to last for sixteen seconds, and it was a good ride. I did not get mangled like some! Congratulations to Lord Michael Bisland at 19 seconds.

If you were around the beach at the time the whirlpool disappeared, I would love to buy you a drink or four!

Send word to the Murder of Crows. But the drink can be anywhere. Just to be clear!

Relationship Note on Kastelon

Lord Kastelon of Keaton, another new face in Arx this season which I have come to appreciate.

He is, of course, handsome, charming and a true delight as many of the Keatons are. But he is also warm with a quick sense of humour, always even-keeled, occasionally reserved, genuinely kind and beautifully blessed with an honest and earnest earthiness that is quite refreshing to see.

I have noticed that there never seems to be any false pretense or manipulations with him. On the whole, he simply is who he seems to be.

Some may say that this in itself is a rarity, but I think has what charmed me most was his kind confidence and sense of honour. He seems a man who who truly keeps his word and pays his debts. Regardless of generous offers others might make, he seems to truly unmoved to falter from this.

Many may swoon and whisper about his other admirable qualities, but I find that is something that makes one take note and wish to know him better.

What wonderful news to hear that the harbor is clear and the whirlpool is gone! I know not from where that horrible thing came, but it was making it so very difficult to shop. Now that fabrics import will continue I can sew many more nice things.

Asher and I are overjoyed; in some months our little house will be filled with new cries again. I am very content right now, and this pregnant is going much smoother than the last already.

Whisper Anisha pointed out that we'll have a newborn just as the twins start walking. I know I'm too happy about a new baby right now because that doesn't so bad.

Wait for it.

So.Many.Plans! Scholar, do you see it outside? Have you?! Also-I went to Lady Belle's honey thing. At the honey place. So much honey! It smelled of honey. It was fun though, and I met a Lady that likes to climb walls. She's right up my alley! I can't wait to talk to her more. Scholar, also...Aella left me more responsibilities. Like---running our house until she comes home. So uh, want to tell me how to do that? Are you LAUGHING AT ME?!

Relationship Note on Medeia

I'm so glad Medeia chose me as her patron. Honest. She's taken all my ideas and have run with the. Making them ten times larger than what -I- would have imagined. And I have a pretty large imagination. We have been a pretty awesome team, despite the differences we share. I think those differences are what binds it.

Chevalle is quiet at this time of year. A man can only hear the wind over the pop of a cooking fire. The horses stay safely wrapped in their blankets, and the soil sleeps in preparation for the coming spring. I feel that we did good work this year. The land was productive, and we managed to make good preparations with our crops. There are some roads I intend to review after the first thaw, and a bridge in the low country that I feel must be rebuilt after a generation of good service. But we have done well, and I am pleased at the good work of the people. If roads, bridges, fields, and fodder could be all I concern myself with for the rest of my life, I would slip from this world happy and content.
